November 2022 Summary – Tenth Warmest on Record
Blue Hill Observatory November 2022 Summary:
November was very warm with less precipitation and much more sunshine than expected. The approximated 24-hour mean temperature for the month of 45.9 deg F was 5.2 degree warmer than the 1891-2020 130-year average for November, and it was 3.8 degrees warmer than the 1991-2020 30-year average. November 2022 was the tenth warmest on record. The average maximum temperature of 55.0 deg F was 4.9 degrees warmer than the 30-year normal, and it was the fourth warmest on record for November. The average minimum temperature of 37.8 deg F was 4.0 degrees warmer than the 30-year normal, and it tied as the twelfth warmest on record. Much of the warmth occurred during the first twelve days of the month, and ten of those days were ten or more degrees warmer than normal. The warmest day on the 6th saw a new daily record maximum of 74F, which surpassed the previous record of 72F set in 2020. November 6th also saw a new daily record high minimum temperature of 63F, which surpassed the previous record for the entire month of November and for the date of 60F set in 2015 and one earlier minimum temperature of 60F on November 8th in 1996. There were four cooling degree days on the 6th, which was the most for any November day, meaning this was the warmest day every observed in November in terms of mean temperature. In addition, each of the four days from the 4th to the 7th reached 70F or higher, and this tied as the second longest such period on record in November. The warmest temperature was 75F on the 5th, which was one degree short of the record for the date, and the lowest was 20F on the 21st. The total precipitation was 3.39 inches, which was 0.92 inches less than the 30-year normal. The greatest rainfall in 24 hours was 0.96 inches on the 30th. A trace of frozen precipitation was observed on the 15th and 17th, and this was 1.8 inches below normal for November. There were no thunderstorm days during the month, and the annual total of 18 was four below average. The mean wind speed was 13.6 mph, and the prevailing wind direction was from the southwest. The highest wind gust was 63 mph from the south-southeast during the rainfall on the 30th. November sunshine was much above average with 178.5 hours of bright sunshine, or 63 percent of possible, which was fifteen percent more than the long-term average for the month, and November was the fifth sunniest on record.

Blue Hill Observatory Fall (September-November) 2022 Summary:
The fall season was very warm with less precipitation and much more sunshine than expected. The approximated 24-hour mean temperature for the season of 54.3 deg F was 3.2 degree warmer than the 1891-2020 130-year average for November, and it tied as the sixth warmest fall on record. The average maximum temperature for fall of 63.1 deg F was 2.0 degrees warmer than the 30-year normal. The average minimum temperature of 46.3 deg F was 1.4 degrees warmer than the 30-year normal, and it tied as the tenth warmest on record. Fall temperatures ranged from a high of 86F on September 4th to a low of 20F on November 21st. The total precipitation for fall was 13.49 inches, which was about a half inch less than the 30-year normal. The greatest rainfall in 24 hours was 2.16 inches on October 13th-14th. The mean wind speed for fall was 11.7 mph, which was the third lowest on record for the season. The highest wind gust was 63 mph from the south-southeast during rainfall on November 30th. Although September and October were slightly less sunny than average, a very sunny November compensated so that Fall sunshine was above average with 555.7 hours, or 57 percent of the possible bright sunshine, which was three percent more than the long-term average.
